Uffington Castle - a Massive Iron Age Hill Fort
Covering around 32,000 square metres, evidence suggests it might have been built in the late Bronze Age, probably in the eighth or seventh century BC. During the Iron Age, there would have been a village, protected by high wooden ramparts. Excavated pits have shown evidence of weaving, spinning and the keeping of animals.
It seems to have ended up abandoned by the 3rd century BC, but at the time of the Romans, evidence of occupation seems to reappear. There may have even been a Roman temple within the remaining walls. Now, however, it stands as a testament to British history, a monument of ancient civilisation, and a stunning place to visit.
