St. Catherine’s Hill - the Chapel with a Mysterious Cave
The chapel’s purpose was to provide a more convenient place of worship for those that lived some distance away from the main church in Guildford. Richard de Wauncey, the rector of St Nicholas Church, actually gained a royal warrant to hold an annual five-day fair at the chapel in 1308. This is just one example of how piety and profit were very closely linked during the medieval period.
As they have discovered several decorative niches carved into the walls, theories are beginning to abound that this cave might have been part of a medieval shrine from around the same time as the Chapel was founded.
As part of the Pilgrim’s way, and accessible from the river, this chapel serves as a beautiful stop off point on your travels.
