Guildford Cathedral - With a Cross Made from the Wood of a Warship
Construction began in the 1930s, but had to be put on hold for the duration of the Second World War. By the time the war was over, the Cathedral’s £250,000 budget was all but spent. The Cathedral Committee launched a buy-a-brick scheme to in 1952, bringing the people of Guildford together to finish the construction. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip both signed bricks, allowing work to be completed in 1961.
Rather interestingly, Guildford Cathedral has a rather large connection to India, with one of the first provosts of the Cathedral, Rev. Walter Boulton, having been a major minster in India.
The Ganges served out of the Bombay Dockyard, a massive shipyard originally set up by the East India Company in 1735.
