The Titanic courage of Jack Phillips - Phillips Memorial Park, Godalming
John George Phillips was born in 1887 and by the time he finished school, he was already training to be a wireless operator. He worked on numerous ships before boarding the Titanic, including the Lusitania, another ship that would be sunk just three years after the Titanic.
In April, 1912, Phillips set sail on the RMS Titanic, bound for New York. He celebrated his 25th Birthday the day after the ship left port. Four days into the voyage, disaster struck. The Titanic hit an iceberg and began to fill with water. Immediately, Phillips began to send distress signals into the night. While the ship began to flood, and people raced around, hastily putting on lifebelts, Phillips stayed, working on the wireless.
As the water swirled around his feet, Phillips continued to send out SOS signals. Not much is known about his fate, but it is safe to say that his bravery and courage to stay working as the ship went down will always be remembered.
