The Memorial to Petworth Boys’ School - the British School Bombed by Mistake

On Tuesday the 29th September 1942 at 10.25am, a lone German bomber, attempting to hit troops in the grounds of Petworth House, missed its target and bombed a nearby boy’s school. With no air raid warning, all children and teachers were inside the school when the bombs hit. The catastrophe and destruction was unfathomable.

Days after the tragedy, they held a mass funeral, officiated by the Bishop of Chichester.
