Farnham Castle - a Centrepoint of the English Civil War

Originally built by the grandson of William the Conquerer, it became a favourite haunt of King John, before being seized by Prince Louis of France during the 1st Baron’s War. The French held the castle for almost a year, until King John died, and, under King Henry III, William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, was able to regain control.

During the English Civil War, the Castle was overrun by parliamentary forces, who held it for the rest of the conflict. Under Cromwell, they began to dismantle the castle, leaving it in the state we see today.
