Farnham Castle - Before the King was Beheaded

In 1642 Farnham Castle was surrounded. The Parliamentarians overran it in less than three hours and with only one casualty. This was to be a step towards the downfall of King Charles I, who went on to lose the war.

And it was here at Vernon House that King Charles I stayed the night on his way to London, where he would later be beheaded. The Vernon family were royalist sympathisers, happy to take in their fallen king for the night. After his stay at Vernon House, King Charles I left the family a parting gift: his morning cap that still sits in the Museum of Farnham today.
