Winchester Great Hall - Where Myth and Monarchy Meet
The original castle was built in 1067 by William the Conquerer, shortly after his victory at Hastings. Just over 150 years later, the Great Hall we can see today was built by Henry III, as the vibrant hub of feasting and social events.
One of its most prominent and famous features is the Roundtable located at the end of the hall. The artwork was designed by King Henry VIII, but the actual table dates from the 13th or 14th century. And, if you look closely, you can see just how far Henry’s influence went. If King Arthur’s face looks familiar, its because Henry had his face painted as Arthur’s, to create the myth that he was descended from the legendary hero.
