The first vlog in our Present History Summer Tour 2023! We explore the island and dig into the history and origins of the Isle of Wight!

The second vlog in the Present History Summer Tour 2023! Investigating the history of the Isle of Wight from the Anglo-Saxon era to the Norman Conquest!

Squaring up against the Devil himself, St Catherine vied for control of the Isle of Wight. Whoever could throw a stone the furthest would win the wager, and rule the island. Catherine launched her great stone a fair distance. The devil, threw his, and it fell short. It now rests at the feet Catherine’s stone, the ultimate symbol of the triumph of good over evil.

The myth is captivating, the reality maybe a little less so. It was supposedly set up at the head of a Neolithic burial barrow. A long barrow would have been a wide, mass grave, with the bodies left open for birds or animals to feed on. The bones were then later buried in chambers.

In the Anglo-Saxon times, the Stone became a place of meeting, a communal moot stone for all. And yet, there is something about this stone that still emanates the mystery of Catherine’s duel.

In this third and final vlog, our Summer Tour concludes with an investigation of the history of the Isle of Wight from the Norman Conquest to the Second World War!
