Chilworth Gunpowder Mills - The King's Own Gunpowder Producers

Originally built in 1626, the mills quickly became the sole supplier of gunpowder to King Charles I. After his infamous fall, the mills were expanded, to become a huge milling system.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, these expanded works diversified their explosive outputs, become pivotal in the manufacture of cordite during the First World War. German Zeppelins actually attempted to bomb the mills, but only got as close as Guildford.

Now, only the shells of the mills remain, standing as a testament to Britain’s violent past.
