Beacon Roman Fortlet - An Ancient Lookout Post

Built during the first century AD, the fortlet was large enough to house around a hundred soldiers, with barracks, a forge and an armoury. It served as a ‘beacon’, a lookout post to keep the Bristol channel secure.

For years, the Silures had waged a fierce guerrilla war against the Romans, proving themselves to be surprisingly difficult to subdue. Inspired by the legendary Caratacus, the Silures presented the Romans with one of their toughest battle in their conquest of Britain. It would take nearly thirty years for the Silures to finally be defeated.

Now, there’s not much left to see, but the views are astonishing and its really no surprise that the Romans built their fortlet where they did.
