How Accurate is 'United' (2011)?

This film tells the story of the Munich Air Disaster of 1958, in which the plane carrying the Manchester United football team, along with a handful of staff and reporters, crashed on takeoff. 23 passengers were killed and 19 injured.

This film does a good job of telling a tragic story that transcended the world of mere football. It is personal, intimate and deals with the aftermath of grief and loss, while still trying to play 'the beautiful game'. It effectively and accurately evokes the smoke-filled world of 1950s football.

However, the omission of most of the players that were killed in the crash, and a pretty poor characterisation of Matt Busby, the manager, leaves this emotional film feeling rather far from real life.

It is a shame, as most of the film's inaccuracies are entirely unnecessary. Anyway, it gets a five out of ten from me.
